UNDERSTANDING MILLENIALS: A BREAKDOWN OF THE CURIOUS GENERATION

Millennials are taking over the workforce, and there has been a lot of buzz about their work habits. Love it or hate it, millennials are here to stay. As a member of the infamous generation, I’m used to the general stereotypes about our habits, interests and personalities, but many are curious about the direct value or weaknesses this generation contributes to the office environment. Let’s break it down.  

Bad news first – Millennials struggle with the office environment.

1. General Office Etiquette: Millennials need to work on internal communication with colleagues. This generation is often criticized for poor email skills and even lack of knowledge when dealing with programs like Outlook.

2. Office Awareness: Millennials often lack social awareness when it comes to colleague interaction. Because this generation enjoys immediate results or gratification, they may not be aware when a desk neighbor is slammed with work when they want a document edited. Frankly speaking, millennials can be selfish when it comes to time and work.

3. Accepting Feedback: The jury is out. Millennials are sensitive. This lack of ability to accept constructive criticism is a challenge in the workplace. This generation tends to be extremely proud of their work (see the “everyone gets a trophy” stereotype). Remember millennials, feedback is a gift.

 

Now for the good news – Millennials add a lot of value to an organization’s body of work.

1. Creative Creatures: Millennials are often praised for their ability to think outside the box. They were encouraged to be creative as kids and learned to embrace individuality.

2. Fearless: This generation is willing to jump into any project. Partly because of quickly adapting curriculum and exposure to many more types of experiences, millennials are versatile in their skillsets. Perfect for an engagement agency like DEVENEY, millennials are graduating with experience in writing, social media, graphic design, web creation and blogging.  

3. Tech Savvy: Millennials did not need to adapt to the technological evolution, they grew up in it. Because of their proclivity for immediacy, millennials are going to work hard to find a computer program or app that gets results fast. They are also quick adapters to new technology, keeping an accepting business relevant and up to date.

Millennials are a different beast, but they aren’t going anywhere. Like any other generation, millennials have strengths and weaknesses. The bottom line is, millennials can add value to an organization, especially when organizations understand what motivates them. Now, let’s start worrying about those Generation Z kids!
